main island of the Ionian Islands. For travellers by sea from the
Northern Europe. or Western Europe is the first outpost of Greece, yet
it is less Greek than any other part of the country.

by the British. They were ceded to Greece in I860, but their varied past
presents a flavour heavily seasoned by Western influences, especially

island group remained prosperous, cultured, and elegant
.The town of Corfu has many fine buildings, including the Georgian-style
Palace and the Treasury of the Order of St Michael and St George. It
also has two surprising British survivals - acricket club and ginger

the summer residence of the Greek Royal Family, within walking distance
of the town.

Corfu has long been connected with European royalty, who used it for
holidays. Empress Elizabeth of Austria built a palace 5 m. from the town
of Corfu; it was bought by the last of the German Emperors, William II,
and today houses a de luxe casino. There are
smart hotels, but plenty of more modest accommodation typical of a tiny
Mediterranean port.
There are splendid beaches, and underwater fishing is popular. You
should not miss the Bay of Palaiokastritsa, 15 m. from the town of Corfu
on the West coast, where live crawfish and lobsters are kept by the
restaurant at the shore. The monastery on the headland provides
breathtaking views.
